AdSense and WordPress PHP Tips from Make Easy Money with Google and AdSenseEric over at “Make Easy Money With Google and AdSense” has a really great introduction to a really great idea with his post entitled “PHP Guide for AdSense Publishers“.

He gives a nice (EXTREMELY brief) tutorial/introduction to PHP, and then goes on to show how you can use it to make your AdSense and WordPress (or any PHP enabled website) admin a lot easier by having “templates” which contain your different AdSense units, and just using “includes” to put them into your pages.

This means having to change just one file containing your AdSense code, as opposed to changing every location where this code is used…

I think I might actually start using this idea. Thanks Eric 😉

ABSA bank - The ABSA Bank in South AfricaABSA is supposedly South Africa’s most popular bank, so I thought I would check out their website and see if there’s anything interesting there. It’s quite a nice site, and one of the useful things I found was a list of the Interest Rates in South Africa and when they were changed.

I think ABSA could work on this Interest Rates page/list a bit as when I looked at it it wasn’t exactly sorted correctly, but it was helpful none the less.

Affiliate Marketing in South Africa with OfferForgeStep 1 in affiliate marketing is understanding what an affiliate actually is. When I refer to affiliate marketing, I will refer to an affiliate as someone who partners with a merchant of some sorts, sending that merchant potential customers and/or leads, in return for a commission. You could earn a percentage of a sale, or a flat fee for the lead.

For example, if you were an Amazon.com affiliate, you would try and send a customer to the Amazon website. Then, if this customer makes a purchase, you could earn a percentage of that purchase as commission.

This all sounds simple enough. But, sometimes, a customer doesn’t even need to make a purchase. For example, I am an affiliate for Outsurance, a South African Insurance company. In this post, “OUTsurance saved me R400 a month“, I talk about how the Insurance Company Outsurance saved me money. It’s a true story, so I thought I’d put it up. And, if you view that article, you will see an ad for Outsurance. For me to earn a commission, all a visitor to my site has to do is ask for a free quote. That’s all. And then I’ll get paid.

Amazingly easy way to make money, isn’t it?

Affiliate marketing is almost easy money. Affiliate Advertising in South Africa

Why is it Easy Money?
Generally, if done right, you can earn a LOT of money.

Why the ALMOST?
There is a little bit of work and a few requirements to earning this money…

Surfing the internet, you will generally see 2 types of advertising. Pay-per-click (PPC) advertising and Cost-per-action (CPA) advertising.

PPC is what Google Adsense does currently, which is display ads, and pay you, the website owner, a certain amount of money every time somebody clicks an ad. This really makes it the easiest of ways to advertise, as it is just a case of you putting up a website with useful and helpful content, and placing Google’s ads on your site.

CPA is different in that you ONLY get paid when a user clicks your ad, and fulfils a requirement on the site that they go to, such as completing a purchase.

But, a BIG difference between the 2: CPA commision tends to be a percentage of a purchase, so if your site visitor clicks a CPA ad and goes and buys something on the other site for $200, you might get $20 just for sending them there. Now, imagine sending 1000 visitors to buy something every month!

I am a member at “OfferForge“, a South African affiliate company, and through this I can sign up to a few local affiliate programs. In the next couple of articles, I’m going to try and show you how easy it should be to be an affiliate marketer in South Africa (and, the rest of the world).

Using Google Talk on your Windows Mobile iMate deviceI am a heavy user of “Google Talk“. And never wanting to be disconnected, I’ve wanted to use Google Talk on my iMate kJam (also known as HTC Wizard) for a long time. Unfortunately, the geniuses at Google have not yet developed a version of Google Talk for Windows Mobile 5, which is what I am using on my iMate kJam.

To counter that, I went in search of an IM (Instant Messaging) application that would allow my iMate phone to connect to the Google Talk servers. The top results in web searches are always pointing to IM+, which is an application for Windows Mobile that lets you connect to ICQ, AOL, MSN, Yahoo!, Jabber AND Google Talk, all from your Windows Mobile Phone. So, I downloaded it (which you can do by clicking here:IM+), and am running it now to see how it works out.

So far, here are the PROs and CONs…

PROs:

– You receive notifications similar to “New SMS” notifications when you receive new messages
– Can connect to all of the above servers, not just Google Talk
– Allows you to see who’s online (which is expected, but cool that it works anyway)
– REAL easy to set up
– Easy enough to use
– You can set it to sign in automatically

CONs:

– More an issue with the phone, but when you receive a call, it disconnects your GPRS connection, disconnecting your from all the servers
– Obviously, be careful of your data charges (downfall of your Service Provider, not the package)
– A tad expensive to buy, though worth it depending on how much you use it

If you use this, or are planning on using this to communicate on Google Talk, please let me know how it goes.

UPDATE: Please check out this post for info on an even BETTER tool for using Google Talk on Windows Mobile phones, as well as using Google Talk on ANY phone with a JAVA runtime environment (most phones these days have this): “Google Talk and MORE on all Mobile Phones

In a recent post entitled “Virgin Money in South Africa” I mentioned some of the benefits and features of getting a Virgin Money Credit Card. Well, Mr Branson and his Virgins are still taking over South Africa. And it seems like a good thing.

Virgin-Mobile-Cellphone-Contracts.jpgVirgin Mobile is a supposed answer to the current, somewhat monopolistic state of affairs of the cellphone industry in South Africa. Anyway, what do I think of Virgin Mobile? I think it’s good. Not perfect, still expensive, but it’s DEFINITELY “cheaper” than the other options (being Cellc, MTN and Vodacom).

Here is how I think it’s cheaper:

– You are not tied to a contract in the normal sense. From what I can see, you pay off your phone interest free over 6, 12 or 24 months. If suddenly you decide to change contracts, and you have spare cash, you can pay off your phone and leave. Unlike the other service providers where you pay off your phone, and then through your nose for the lost life savings they won’t be able to take from you

– You know what you are paying for. Seems insignificant? Lucky you. The most irritating things in today’s advertising is the asterisk and the phrase “Terms and conditions apply”. Only problem is, sometimes that asterisk doesn’t even LEAD to the full disclosure. It appears to with Virgin Mobile.

– You don’t have to pay for things you don’t want. Like Itemised billing or Caller Id. On Vodacom, they have GREAT specials. You can get a phone for only R39 a month*. SEE THAT ASTERISK!!! It means you still have to pay extra for Caller ID and Itemised Billing. Which are compulsory.

So, all in all, having a Virgin Mobile contract might work out to roughly the same as your current MTN contract, but at least you know what you’re getting, and you’re not chained to the chair as well…

Let me know what you think of Virgin Mobile…

Nokia Ringtones – What to use

If you have a Nokia Cellphone (like probably 50% of cell phone users do), then you might be searching the internet for free Nokia Ringtones. Here is a little tip I thought you might like to save some money. Instead of hunting for free ringtones, hunt for actual file types that you need to use.

Here’s a few examples:

If you want a Polyphonic Nokia Ringtone, then you need to search for midi files (files that end in .mid). This is what a Polyphonic ringtone actually is. The quality normally just depends on your Nokia, and how many channels it can play. Though any Nokia purchased in the last year or so should play more than 4 channels.

If you want TrueTone ringtones, these are generally just MP3 files. If you want more info on creating your own MP3 ringtones, take a look at these posts I’ve written. The first post is about getting cheap or free MP3s, and the second post is about how to use these to create your TrueTone Nokia Ringtone:

Free MP3s – Cheap Music

If you need any help, I’d be glad to help you. Just ask the question below…

If you want to save money buying music, then here’s and offer you shoudn’t be able to refuse. It’s from a company called eMusic and they offer a subscription service to download a certain number of MP3s per month.

Why do I think this is a good idea? Well, because you could end up paying only 25c a song. And THAT’S the most EXPENSIVE price.

But, I did mention free MP3s. That’s because, if you go and sign up for a free trial, you will receive 25 FREE MP3s. You will have to enter your credit card info for the free trial so that they can ensure that you only get 1 free trial, but it’s easily cancelled after the free trial.

Just one tip: don’t over-extend yourself. You might sign up for the free trial and realise that they have over 1 million songs to choose from. Then you’re hooked… So think about it carefully before going to the site. 😉

Using “Windows Movie Maker”, you can create your own ringtones for free. Here’s how to do it. Please note that you can click all the images below and they should open in a new window so that you can see the image better.

STEP 1 – Open Windows Movie Maker

Click on the following:

Start Button” – “All Programs” – “Accessories” – “Entnertainment” – “Windows Movie Maker

STEP 2 – Import a song

To import a song that you want to convert into a ringtone go to the following menu:

File” – “Import into Collection

Then, search for the song that you want to use as a ringtone. This can be an MP3 or a WMA file, as well as various other formats of music. The format just depends on how you copied the music to your computer. For example, Windows Media Player tends to copy music as WMA file types, and MusicMatchJukebox tends to use MP3 file types.

Once you’ve found your song, select it, and click “Import

STEP 3 – Add to “Storyboard”

Once you’ve added your song to the “Collection”, you should see it at the top (Item 1 in the image below). Select this song, and drag it to the bottom of your window, onto the “Audio/Music” track of your “Storyboard“.

You should see it at the bottom of your screen (Item 6 in the image below).

Creating free ringtones using Windows Movie Maker

STEP 4 – Edit so that you only hear what you want to

Once you’ve added your music to the storyboard, you can edit it so that you only have what you want to hear. This has 2 benefits:
– It saves space on your phone (perhaps in 2 years time this won’t be necessary)
– More importantly, you can hear a certain section of the song.

Most people only want the chorus or intro to a song, for example. Here’s how to get that:

– Listen to the song by pressing play on the right of your screen (Item 4 in the first image above).
– Take a note of the time of the start of your section (0, if it’s the beginning), and the time of the end of your song. You can see the time at the top of your storyboard (Item 5 in the first image above). If you want a more exact time, you can zoom in using the Magnifying glass at the top-left of the storyboard section (Item 3 in the first image above).
– At the end of your Audio Track you should see a sort of triangle pointing left (Item 7 in the first image above, on the right). Click on that triangle, hold your mouse button down, and drag it to the end of your section that you just took a note of above (watching the time at the top of the Storyboard). Below is what it looks like while I’m doing that:

Creating free ringtones using Windows Movie Maker - Shortening end

– If the beginning of the section you want is not the beginning of the song, do the same with dragging the beggining “triangle” to the start of the section you want. The image below shows me selecting the new start of my track (after having zoomed in a little using the magnifying glass).

Creating free ringtones using Windows Movie Maker - Shortening start

As you can see in the image below, my selection is floating somewhere around the 20 second mark.

Creating free ringtones using Windows Movie Maker - Floating

This obviously won’t work, as I want the ringtone to start as soon as my phone start ringing. So, to move it to the beginning, just drag it to the start of your Storyboard. Below is what it looks like after this:

Creating free ringtones using Windows Movie Maker - Complete Ringtone

STEP 5 – Save your new Ringtone

Now, all you have to do is save. On the left of “Windows Movie Maker” under “Finish Movie“, click “Save to my computer”. Just choose a place on your computer that you will remember, and save it using a name that you will remember.

Unfortunately, “Windows Movie Maker” saves audio files using the WMA format and not the MP3 format, so if your phone can only play MP3 ringtones, then you will have to use the next step (in a new article) to convert the WMA file to MP3. But, if you are the proud owner of an iMate (or similar) device that uses the “Windows Mobile” operating system, you can start using your new ringtone almost straight away. You can follow the instructions here to upload and use your new ringtone: “iMate Ringtones – kJam Example

Free Ringtones – You already have them

So, if you want free ringtones for your cellphone, then you’ve come to the right place. And, after ALL those ads you’ve seen promising free ringtones, and cheap ringtones, etc. WHY would you come here? Well, my ringtones are definitely free. Reason: you probably already have them on your computer already.

Ok, so I’m talking about MP3s. But it’s REALLY easy to create MP3 ringtones. This does mean that your phone has to be able to use MP3 ringtones, but I’d say that most phones do by now.

So, in this “create your own MP3 ringtone” series, you will need the following:

1 – Windows XP (Not sure if you need Windows XP Professional)
2 – Due to step 1, you should have “Windows Movie Maker” – Go to “Start => All Programs => Accessories => Entertainment”
3 – An Mp3 or 2. If you don’t have any yet, I’ll tell you in the next post how to create one, or, you can check out the link below
4 – A cellphone that can use MP3 ringtones.

If you’d like a cheap and easy way to get free or cheap MP3s, take a look at my post entitled “Free MP3s – Cheap Music” for details about a site where you can download MP3s. It’s subscription based, but you get 25 free downloads if you try it out… Sounds better than iTunes in my opinion (and 1/4 of the price).

And away we go…

Virgin-Money-South-Africa.gifVirgin has just released Virgin Money in South Africa. Virgin is a company with an excellent public image, and this is a GREAT thing to happen for numerous reasons, the 4 main reasons being:

Standard Bank
ABSA
Nedbank
FNB

What do I mean by this? Well, these are the major banks in South Africa, and probably 4 of the biggest con-artists, charging customers RIDICULOUS amounts just to gain access to THEIR OWN MONEY!

Anyway, on a more serious note, here are some of the benefits of using Virgin Money (as found on their website):

  • You have 25 days in which to pay for anything you’ve bought before you are charged interest
  • The interest rate is only 15.75% – as opposed to 17% for ANY other credit cards in the country (South Africa)
  • If you have a Credit Balance, you will earn 5% on that money – ALSO the highest Credit Interest Rates on most savings and Investment accounts
  • No Annual Credit Card fee
  • No fees when you swipe your card
  • No Internet Banking fees

So, do YOU think this is worth it??? You can leave a comment below

Credit Card Investment

The other day, while reading my American Express (AMEX) credit card statement, I noticed that Credit Interest Rates on the card were set at 4.5% for anything under R1 MILLION.

Now, I’m not sure about all other Investment Accounts, but I have a 32 Notice Account, and this account only has a 4.25% interest rate. Which means that, putting money on my credit card will earn me more than if I INVESTED it!!! AND I wouldn’t have to wait 32 days before being able to use it.

If I put my money into my Amex Card, I would earn more money, and have access to it immediately. It’s not my Primary Credit Card so I could just keep this card locked away at home until I needed the money.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this, though… Please leave a comment at the bottom of this page.
