ABSA bank - The ABSA Bank in South AfricaWell, I’m looking forward to an upgrade in South Africa’s banking system. According to “Business Report“:

Absa on Thursday told the Competition Commission of Enquiry into Banking and the National Payments System that South Africa cannot afford the cost of having a less sophisticated banking system.

In his presentation to the Commission, Absa Group chief executive Steve Booysen said that Absa welcomed the enquiry not only for what it might do to explain banking to the public, but also because its timing is good for Absa.

Though, the part that REALLY peaks my interest is the following:

First National Bank (FNB) in its presentation to the Enquiry earlier this month suggested that banks should agree to reduce SASwitch fees. But von Zeuner said that it is unclear what they meant, because if they meant fees to customers, it is a commercial issue for banks to individually decide.

FNB can therefore do this if it wants. “If they meant scrapping interchange fees we are bemused since we have already made that proposal to them in April this year but FNB did not respond favourably. Absa’s position is that we favour lower charges to ATM customers.” – I-Net Bridge

As I mentioned in the post “ABSA and FNB trying to scrap saswitch fees“, this would be a GREAT benefit, as sometimes the Saswitch fees can be as much as 10% of your ATM withdrawal amount…

Any comments?

Well, it definitely looks like a thing that will save us South Africans money, thanks in part to ABSA.

ABSA bank - The ABSA Bank in South AfricaHave you ever been out and needed cash and just WISHED that the ATM across the road was your own bank’s ATM? Well, according to IOL, ABSA is joining other banks, including FNB, in their bid to remove the fees you have to pay to use other banks’ ATMs.

Travelling around the world has shown me that we are still behind the rest of the world in ripping off customers. When I was working in Ireland it was a great thing being able to draw your money from any ATM you found with being charged extra for it. (Was I charged at all??? I can’t remember).

I guess Virgin Mobile, Virgin Money and Barclays coming to South Africa have started great things…

ABSA bank - The ABSA Bank in South AfricaABSA is supposedly South Africa’s most popular bank, so I thought I would check out their website and see if there’s anything interesting there. It’s quite a nice site, and one of the useful things I found was a list of the Interest Rates in South Africa and when they were changed.

I think ABSA could work on this Interest Rates page/list a bit as when I looked at it it wasn’t exactly sorted correctly, but it was helpful none the less.
