Testing OUTsurance and the rest

Testing the skills and answering abilities of companies in South Africa is something you should do. Read what happened when OUTsurance and 23 other companies were put to the test…

Well, it looks like Fin24 spent quite a while testing the response of OUTsurance and a whole lot of other service providers.

We always want to know if we’re getting a good deal on our insurance, so I gave OUTsurance a call to see if the company could save me a few rand at the end of each month.

They tested the following scenarios:

  • Time taken to answer call
  • First Impression
  • Ability to answer query
  • Courtesy of agent
  • Overall score
  • (not an average)

And they tested the following companies on these “skills”

  • OUTsurance
  • Pick ‘n Pay
  • Vodacom
  • Joburg Connect
  • Home magazine
  • Woolworths
  • Telkom
  • Edgars Fashion Hotline
  • TelkomInternet
  • Go Banking
  • Fedex
  • FNB
  • Autopage
  • Woolworths
  • DHL
  • Vodacom
  • SA Revenue Service
  • McCarthy Call-a-car
  • Dial-Direct
  • Multichoice
  • Jo’burg Connect
  • 1LifeDirect
  • Mango
  • Virgin Mobile

It looks like DHL and McCarthy Call-a-Car came out tops, with the fastest times and 5/5 in all areas. OUTsurance came out about 4th or 5th, which isn’t TOO bad…

Guess that gives you a good enough reason to go and get yourself an OUTsurance quote

Proudly South African

Proudly South African goods are not necessarily cheaper, but they’re made in South Africa. And we all know South Africans make the best products. Right?

The Proudly SA Logo is easily recognised in South AfricaLiving in South Africa, I’m sure you’ve seen the Proudly South African logo. Definitely one of the easiest to recognise logos in the country.

And, believe it or not, I actually look out for it when I go shopping. It just feels right knowing that you are supporting your own country when you spend your money. Of course, within reason. I’m not about to pay a lot more money for something that I can get a lot cheaper, even if it WAS imported from China.

Anyway, it looks like they might be struggling with a lack of financing, according to Fin24. They claim that they’re not, which I hope is true:

Proudly SA chief executive officer Manana Moroka, said she was confident they understood the context of the briefing and viewed the initiative as part of an ongoing process to serve their interests.

“Many members, including key sponsors such as WesBank, have again pledged their full support to the campaign, for which I would like to thank them,” she said.

I was just surfing the web and I noticed this website: “The best 100 money tips ever!

They’ve got some REALLY good tips for saving and earning money, and if you can read all the way through the article, I’m sure you’ll learn something. It might even be good to print it all out and make yourself some reading material for the bath.

Of course, some of them are really obvious:

58. Don’t fly now, pay later. It is very depressing to be still paying for a holiday (or any other luxury) five years later, when you want another.

57. Beware of plastic. Store cards and credit cards may be convenient, but they are also an easy way of running up debt.

Some of these money tips were probably told to you by your grand father:

1. Save 10 cents from every R1 you earn. If you put away at least 10 percent of your income as part of a long-term savings plan, there is a good chance that you will have a financially secure future and be able to attain your financial goals.

But there are some that I haven’t heard before:

13. A product offering a range of underlying investment product choices, such as a wide collection of unit trust funds, is often not in your best interests and may come at additional cost. Be very cautious if anyone recommends that you invest in a linked investment product with a wide selection of underlying investment choices. Remember that linked investment products come in many forms and are also offered by life assurance companies. The simpler and cheaper solution may be to invest in a properly diversified unit trust fund, such as an asset allocation fund that offers underlying investments in all the main asset classes, such as cash, bonds and shares.

66. Always have a lawyer check a property deed of sale before you sign up. Also make a deed of sale subject to conditions such as a proper inspection being done, if you suspect building faults, and to raising a mortgage bond, if you need one.

80. Do not take out a life assurance investment contract for more than 10 years. You don’t know how your financial position could change. At the end of the period you can always extend the contract, but if you have to cut it short, there are penalties involved that could see you getting back less money than you paid in. The main reason life assurance sales people attempt to get you to take out longer-term policies is because they receive more commission.

So, I’ve been running a few Affiliate campaigns with South African Affiliate Marketing Companies for a few months now, and here’s what I’ve found:

Traffic Synergy

Pros

– A LOT of companies that you can run affiliate offers for. And not just South African companies.
– Statistics are easy enough to see
– You get assigned an Affiliate Manager who should be EXTREMELY friendly and helpful… You can ask them anything, almost any time of the day.
– They offer a South African Ringtone affiliate campaign with Jamster (see the banner above).

Cons

I don’t really have any cons at the moment… Do you?

ZA OfferForge

Pros

– The companies that are running Affiliate Offers through ZA OfferForge (do I really need to say the “ZA”?) have great payouts
– You get frequent updates via newsletters or general emails
– They seem to use the same system as TrafficSynergy, so the system will be familiar

Cons

– I’ve mailed for assistance twice. First time I had a GREAT response. Second time I didn’t get ANY response, but the issue was resolved
– There aren’t THAT many companies offering Affiliate Programs through ZA OfferForge

Do you use or know of another company that you would like to recommend?

A review of Debt Consolidation News

At first sight, this website looks a little plain. But, at a closer look, you’ll see that they’ve actually focused more on the content than on the design. For example, the article “How to Negotiate with Creditors to Avoid Bankruptcy” has a word count of almost 1,700 words. And with gems like the following, you’ll see there is a lot of helpful information you can use to improve your lifestyle:

Money magazine reported sometime ago that 90 percent of all bankruptcies could be avoided with an added monthly income of just $250.

and

If you owe a large amount and feel you’re sinking into the black hole of debt, a budget is not the only change you need to implement. One alternative is DEBT CONSOLIDATION. This option works if you have multiple debts with multiple lenders, all at varying interest rates.

Due to the amount of info, the category pages tend to load quite slowly for those not on broadband connections, so breaking up the info might help in this regard, perhaps having snippets on each Category page, leading off to the rest of the article. Not only would this help the page load time, but might actually give a better user experience, with users being able to see at a glance whether there is an interesting article they would like to read.

Perhaps having a navigable sitemap page would help.

Enough about possible improvements. As I’ve said, there are a lot of articles that you will find interesting. With info on paying off your loans if you’re a student, to tips on cutting back your costs if you’re a business owner, there will definitely be something you can learn from the site.

It is not worth paying $34 dollars to get a list of companies that is not worth anything! It did not work for me, and I can’t see how it will work for someone that tries to make an extra living out of it. Bottom line this is a SCAM

Here’s a nice little play for you to read, called “Google Porn: A Play in One Act

My favourite part:

LARRY: “Yeah, and you’d configure it to your personal tastes. Like, there’d be a ’fetish’ dropdown menu, and you can pick anything from bikini pics to [truck drives by the window, obfuscates speaking] to celebrity snapshots etc.”
SERGEY: “We might even suggest a new fetish based on the mixture of other fetish selections.”
ERIC: “Will there be midget porn?”

OUTsurance – South African Helpers?

In my original post about OUTsurance I spoke about how OUTsurance managed to save me R400 a month with my Insurance Premiums.

In my original post about OUTsurance I spoke about how OUTsurance managed to save me R400 a month with my Insurance Premiums. As I say in that post, I recommend that you get a free quote from them just to see if you can also save. Click here to get your OUTsurance quote.

Anyway, the reason for this post is just to say that I REALLY appreciate the whole “Mobile Pointsman” initiative. Here’s an excerpt from the news article on the OUTsurance website:

Click here nowThe project is an extension of Project Traffic Freeflow launched in September last year which, to date, has seen the introduction of 22 fixed pointsmen placed at high traffic volume intersections in and around Johannesburg.

In the second phase of the plan, 10 Mobile Pointsmen will be made available on motorcycles in an effort to further alleviate the city’s congested roads. These Mobile Pointsmen will predominantly focus on the Midrand, Sandton, Fourways and Randburg regions. They will be deployed to intersections where traffic signals are malfunctioning due to power outages and accidents.

I’ve seen these guys in action, and even though a lot of people complain about the apparent incompetence of pointsmen, I still think they can be a thousand times better than waiting at traffic lights that don’t function correctly…

So, another one up for OUTsurance in my opinion.

Of course not. This site has nothing to do with porn. Unless you’re looking for a “Topless Car Wash” or answers to “Is Prostitution easy money?“.

Sorry to disappoint, but maybe go take a look at this and get a sexy surprise for someone.

Either way, I’m just trying to see if I can get all of you fellow South Africans visiting my site. This isn’t exactly an informative post, but I’m just trying out an idea I got from Britney Spears Naked.

Check out my little Britney Spears all in red. I love my pets... ;-)

ABSA bank - The ABSA Bank in South AfricaWell, I’m looking forward to an upgrade in South Africa’s banking system. According to “Business Report“:

Absa on Thursday told the Competition Commission of Enquiry into Banking and the National Payments System that South Africa cannot afford the cost of having a less sophisticated banking system.

In his presentation to the Commission, Absa Group chief executive Steve Booysen said that Absa welcomed the enquiry not only for what it might do to explain banking to the public, but also because its timing is good for Absa.

Though, the part that REALLY peaks my interest is the following:

First National Bank (FNB) in its presentation to the Enquiry earlier this month suggested that banks should agree to reduce SASwitch fees. But von Zeuner said that it is unclear what they meant, because if they meant fees to customers, it is a commercial issue for banks to individually decide.

FNB can therefore do this if it wants. “If they meant scrapping interchange fees we are bemused since we have already made that proposal to them in April this year but FNB did not respond favourably. Absa’s position is that we favour lower charges to ATM customers.” – I-Net Bridge

As I mentioned in the post “ABSA and FNB trying to scrap saswitch fees“, this would be a GREAT benefit, as sometimes the Saswitch fees can be as much as 10% of your ATM withdrawal amount…

Any comments?

Ok, forget about IM+ (read what I said here: “Google Talk on iMate phones“). I tried this application for a while and it was ok, but I still think it’s a bit expensive, and it didn’t function as well as I expected it to.

Go take a look at Talkonaut.

Google Talk on Windows Mobile and Google Talk on Mobile PhonesI don’t really know what to say about this app other than it is BRILLIANT!!! Why? It just works. And not only can you use it to communicate with your Google Talk buddies on Windows Mobile, but this is the equivalent of Google Talk on Mobile Phones! Let me just quote the Talkonaut website for more details, as they say it best:

  • Talkonaut is a Google Talk[tm] like application for your mobile phone.
  • Unlike most others IM clients, Talkonaut lets you explore all features of VoIP on almost any J2ME complient device.
  • Talkonaut can be used with any Jabber account, including Google Talk. And that is all for FREE.
  • Using Talkonaut you may now talk from your mobile to other Google Talk or MSN/Live Messenger users or even to any SIP phone or service.
  • Talkonaut allows you to make cheap VoIP calls to any mobile or landline phones worldwide in a one-click way!
  • Talkonaut presents you a user interface similar to Google Talk[tm].
  • No registration required: you download Talkonaut on your phone and run it, the rest will be done automatically!

Or, even better, if you are a dad, is it the perfect birthday present for your son???

ABSA and FNB trying to scrap saswitch fees

Well, it definitely looks like a thing that will save us South Africans money, thanks in part to ABSA.

Well, it definitely looks like a thing that will save us South Africans money, thanks in part to ABSA.

ABSA bank - The ABSA Bank in South AfricaHave you ever been out and needed cash and just WISHED that the ATM across the road was your own bank’s ATM? Well, according to IOL, ABSA is joining other banks, including FNB, in their bid to remove the fees you have to pay to use other banks’ ATMs.

Travelling around the world has shown me that we are still behind the rest of the world in ripping off customers. When I was working in Ireland it was a great thing being able to draw your money from any ATM you found with being charged extra for it. (Was I charged at all??? I can’t remember).

I guess Virgin Mobile, Virgin Money and Barclays coming to South Africa have started great things…

Ever heard of Danny Sullivan? He’s one of the Internet’s most respected Search Authorities, reporting on all things search related.

Why would you care? Well, there’s a good chance that Danny Sullivan has arrived here via a Google Vanity Search (hi danny). A Vanity Search is just a name for the practice of entering your name into Google or any of the other Search Engines to see who’s saying what about you. In my previous post, “Blog Alert Opimization – Google AdSense Rocks” I spoke about writing content that could possibly be sent to Google Alert subscribers in the hope of getting more readers to your blog.

No, this is NOT Danny SullivanCombining the practice of Vanity Searches with Google’s News Alerts, you could set up an alert to notify you every day of anything new on the internet that has mentioned your name. There are people out there who want to know what other’s are saying about them, or where they’re being referenced. So, you could write something in the hope of getting noticed.

Now, writing content that mentions people who are likely to actually do daily or weekly vanity searches isn’t really much help unless you manage to write content that would actually be appealing, and possibly get the visitor to recommend your post/blog/site on their high-traffic site.

But don’t go flooding the internet with my name now, you hear… 😉

Anyway, if you have any comments or thoughts on this practice, or just wanna say hi, please leave a comment below.

Google Blog Alert Optimization for Google News AlertsYip. You heard right. Google AdSense Rocks. And here’s why:

1 – Because AdSense can earn you money
2 – Because AdSense is easy to set up
3 – Because it can bring you visitors…

Say what?!?!?!

Yip. Google recently added “Blog Alerts” to their “News Alerts” functionality, and believe it or not, there are people out there that watch and wait for alerts about AdSense. How do I know? Well, HOPEFULLY because I’m not the only person reading news about Google AdSense.

So I’ve added this post to the SEO Info Category of this blog as I think that it is a form of optimising your site for Search Engines, BUT, it focuses on Google News Alerts. Though I’d love to be known for coining the phrase “Blog Alert Optimisation“.

What I’d love even more is, if you arrived here because this post caught your attention in a Google Alert, PLEASE leave a comment below to say hi.
