A lot of new bloggers might notice that, after a while, they start to receive quite a few comments on their posts. All exceited, they rush to see who’s said what, and, noticing that someone has said “I like your blog, come check out mine” MIGHT realise they’ve been hit by blog spam.

I’ve been through this stage. I was excited when I was told that, while doing some research, so-and-so landed on my blog and really enjoyed reading it. I realised it was spam when I got the same comment over and over. Oh, and the fact that I could get my breasts enlarged if I visited their site.

There is a good article called “How to Spam with Blogs: A Tutorial for Every Wanna-be SEO” outlining a few of these spamming methods. Here’s a quote:

The problem with all blog spam is that it relies on SEO “tactics” that the search engines hate. Sometimes a nuisance, sometimes illegal and almost always results in more garbage on the Internet. There is nothing worse than having to wade through someone’s garbage to find good quality information. But one thing is for sure, for as long as blog spam works, one man’s garbage will continue to be a spammer’s goldmine.

On my blogs, because I’m using WordPress, there is a neat little plugin I’ve installed called “Akismet“, which, in the words of it’s creators:

Akismet checks your comments against the Akismet web serivce to see if they look like spam or not. You need a WordPress.com API key to use this service. You can review the spam it catches under “Manage” and it automatically deletes old spam after 15 days.

Using this plugin, I’ve caught about 100 comments that are actually spam comments. This is nothing compared to what some blogs actually get. But it definitely helps.

3K2 is a GREAT customization of the WordPress theme, K2.

Why is it so great? Well, the “3” in 3K2 is for the 3 column layout that is used. I downloaded and installed K2, but I’m a 3-column kinda guy, so I didn’t really feel the urge to use it.

But now, with the 3K2 theme, there’s a good chance I will.

Read this post from the Coding Horror blog called “Teach Yourself ASP.NET 2.0 in 23 Hours”. All about bettering the other by 1.

2 Reasons why I like this post:

1 – PLEASE tell me what movie the dialog is from, but I remember loving the movie
2 – Excellent mony making idea. Not necessarily writing a “Learn this or that in 23 hours”, but rather, better the competition.

If you’re better, why wouldn’t a person choose you?

If you’re planning on blogging for money, take a look at an article on ProBlogger called “Is Your Niche Nichy Enough? A Tale of Two Adsense Blogs“. This gives a very quick overview on how creating a site that targets a smaller market is possibly better than a site a very broad topic.

By now, you probably know pro-blogging success (AKA making money) depends on finding the right niche. Focus on a specific topic, and you draw readers interested in researching and potentially buying something related to that topic. Whether you’re into affiliate programs or pay-per-click advertising, it’s easy to capitalize on a niche audience.

Finding a niche can be really simple, and yet, why don’t we all find one?
One tip I can offer when trying to come up with a Niche: Think about something you enjoy doing, or even just researching, take it down to a granular level, and talk about that.

As the writer of the ProBlogger article shows, instead of writing about “warmth in the home”, which could mean fireplaces, as well as heaters, blankets, slippers, etc., they took ONE of these topics and focused on that.

My brother came to me the other day about a plan he had of buying Iraqi Dinar. When I asked him why he wanted to buy Iraqi Dinar, he gave me the whole sales talk on how buying the “NEW Iraqi Dinar” at the current exchange rate will make him a millionaire once the Iraqi Dinar hit the open market.

Do I think he should have bought them? Not really. My motto is: If something sounds to easy to be true, it usually is.

But I did do some research on this, and found quite a few sites that were offering to sell me the New Iraqi Dinar. For example, one site could sell me 1,000,000 Iraqi Dinar for $700. And that it was so low due to the Iraqi wars. Some sites have evidence showing how war-torn countries’ currencies go up in value almost exponentially in peace time.

I guess I’m just a chicken when it comes to something SO risky. If you’ve had any experience buying Iraqi Dinar (or some other foreign currency) ovr the internet, please let me know.

As I mentioned in my article entitled “WordPress SEO – SE Friendly URLs“, search engines also take the URL of a web page into consideration. And, one thing that a lot of people miss out on is the naming of the Categories.

One of my blogs gets most of it’s visitors landing on the main page of each category. You can see what I mean by “Main Page” if you click the “Money” link on the left of this page. This is because the Category names are also keyword rich.

So, this tip is just a quick reminder to also choose your category names carefully. Don’t go naming your categories irrelevant names. Think of all the little things that will help with your blog’s Search Engine Optimization.

Piggy Bank Saving Money.jpgSome people seem to have forgotten all about saving money. In my parents’ day, it was always a case of putting 10% of your earnings aside every month. My parents tried to teach that to me, but saving money isn’t always that easy.
For example, an article in a recent “Fortune Magazine” (end of March 2006) talks about how the rate of household saving in the U.S. has dipped to -0.4%. That is SHOCKING. (A side note of depression: China has an average household saving rate of 30%, also bad in it’s own way, though).

An article on MSN Money called “Leave your ATM card at home” talks about how paying with cash helped save a person money because it made her stop and think if she really needed the item.

The article does mention a few reasons why Credit Cards are helpful, such as:

  • They’re easier to track. With debit and credit cards, you know exactly what you’ve spent where…
  • They offer some protection. Credit cards, and debit cards with MasterCard or Visa logos, promise “zero liability” for consumers if the cards are lost or stolen…
  • They give you rewards. Many credit cards and even some debit cards offer reward points, frequent-flier miles, cash back or other fringe benefits. The more you use them, the more rewards you pile up.

But overall, they talk about how using cash is better than credit because you can’t spend what you don’t have. If you have put cash away for such things as entertainment, and you have run out, it isn’t as easy to just go out and spend.

Definitely an interesting read, along with the Fortune Magazine.

I believe self improvement and self development are key points in being successful. Being able to develope your skills and then use them effectively is very important.

Over on “Entrepreneur’s Journey“, Yaro Starak has an interview with Steve Pavlina. In Steve’s own words, here’s a brief intro:

Among other labels that apply, I’m a 34-year-old internet entrepreneur, and I currently run one of the most popular personal development web sites on the Internet, StevePavlina.com. All of the site’s content is free for visitors. I have no products, no customers, no inventory, no employees, and no sales. Yet I make a pretty decent living from the site, in addition to other streams of (mostly passive) income.

It really is an interesting interview, though it’s only part 1. It gives a bit of insight into the StevePavlina.com website and it’s content, as well as his thoughts on dealing with Apathy, which is one of the questions Yaro posed. Here’s a quote:

Long-term apathy is a result of confusing perception and creation. People who are consistently apathetic think they are passively perceiving reality when in fact they are actually creating it.

Quite an intense thought, and I fully suggest you read the entire interview.

Home_Phone_Money.jpgAs illegal as this post’s title sounds, it’s not actually that bad. 😉 It’s actually related to an article I read a couple of months back on MSN Money called “4 real jobs you can do from home“.

I really enjoyed this article and thought you might as well. It highlights 4 ways you could work from home and make money. The 4 jobs the writer mentions are:

1 – A call center in your home:

This talks about how companies are “outsourcing” their sales and problem-solving call centers to home-based workers, thanks to the internet and improved call-routing capabilities.

2 – Start a Web Business:

This section talks about how you can start a profitable online business using skills you might already have…

3 – Mystery shopping and survey taking:

An interesting thought, being paid to go and shop, and then write reviews on your experience. (I wonder if you get to keep your purchases…)

4 – Online auctions:

And, finally, I’m sure we’ve all heard about how you can make money trading with online auctions like eBay.

It all sounds so easy to make money online these days. But it’s still hard work. Remember though, it can be hard work, but if it’s fun, it kind of makes it Easy Money. 🙂

If you’ve been searching the internet on how to make money using the internet, I can almost guarantee you’ve seen ads and articles for SEO Experts.

SEO – Search Engine Optimization:

This is the process and practice of improving your Web site’s rankings in the Search Engine’s results. Any SEO Expert will tell you that the closer to #1 you are on Google’s search results, the better. Think about it. If you search for something, how far down the results do you go before clicking a link?

So, must you spend money and hire an SEO Expert? That is up to you. If you are a big corporation like Microsoft, and you aren’t #1 when a person searches for “Microsoft“, then there’s a problem. Either you fix it yourself, or hire an SEO Expert.

What about those of us trying to make money online? Well, my advice is to either browse around and get the information yourself, or, maybe something easier, take a look and see what these SEO Experts have to offer. Maybe it’s worth it…

If you are looking for a free theme for your WordPress installation, I FULLY recommend “Shaded Grey” from WP Themes.info.

This is probably the slickest looking theme I have seen for WordPress. It is only a 2 column theme, and I do like 3 columns, but I will definitely have to use this theme on one of my blogs.

Useless Knowledge Rant: I changed the icons on one of the programs I use everyday in the office the other day, and a colleague of mine asked “Why Bother???”. Well the User Interface is such a key issue with me. Things HAVE to look cool. Why tell you this?!? Go take a look a look at the theme above and see for yourself…
