Ok, forget about IM+ (read what I said here: “Google Talk on iMate phones“). I tried this application for a while and it was ok, but I still think it’s a bit expensive, and it didn’t function as well as I expected it to.

Go take a look at Talkonaut.

I don’t really know what to say about this app other than it is BRILLIANT!!! Why? It just works. And not only can you use it to communicate with your Google Talk buddies on Windows Mobile, but this is the equivalent of Google Talk on Mobile Phones! Let me just quote the Talkonaut website for more details, as they say it best:

Google Talk on iMate phones

I am a heavy user of “Google Talk“. And never wanting to be disconnected, I’ve wanted to use Google Talk on my iMate kJam (also known as HTC Wizard) for a long time. Unfortunately, the geniuses at Google have not yet developed a version of Google Talk for Windows Mobile 5, which is what I am using on my iMate kJam.

To counter that, I went in search of an IM (Instant Messaging) application that would allow my iMate phone to connect to the Google Talk servers. The top results in web searches are always pointing to IM+, which is an application for Windows Mobile that lets you connect to ICQ, AOL, MSN, Yahoo!, Jabber AND Google Talk, all from your Windows Mobile Phone. So, I downloaded it (which you can do by clicking here:IM+), and am running it now to see how it works out.

So far, here are the PROs and CONs…

PROs:

– You receive notifications similar to “New SMS” notifications when you receive new messages
– Can connect to all of the above servers, not just Google Talk
– Allows you to see who’s online (which is expected, but cool that it works anyway)
– REAL easy to set up
– Easy enough to use
– You can set it to sign in automatically

CONs:

– More an issue with the phone, but when you receive a call, it disconnects your GPRS connection, disconnecting your from all the servers
– Obviously, be careful of your data charges (downfall of your Service Provider, not the package)
– A tad expensive to buy, though worth it depending on how much you use it

If you use this, or are planning on using this to communicate on Google Talk, please let me know how it goes.

Google buys Yahoo!

Well, not really. But I could have just used the same title as the New York Times’ article “This Boring Headline Is Written for Google“. Which one catches your attention more?

And, which one has more relevance to this post? The second one, right? Meaning Google would probably rate this post higher if it’s title was more relevant.

The article on the New York Times website is all about how online news editors have to cater for Google and the SE Team’s algorithms when considering a headline for news articles nowadays. Which causes a bit of a dilemma – catch a reader’s attention, or get a reader via a relevant Search Engine Ranking…

JOURNALISTS over the years have assumed they were writing their headlines and articles for two audiences — fickle readers and nitpicking editors. Today, there is a third important arbiter of their work: the software programs that scour the Web, analyzing and ranking online news articles on behalf of Internet search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN…

It seems online news editors really have their job cut out for them. And it seems that SEO is playing a major part in more and more areas of the online world. Oh well, life would be boring if it was easy.

Google Finance A Great tool!

What better way to make money than by using a tool for most of your Financial needs? The Official Google Blog has just posted about the release of Google Finance, saying:

“…we shared the same goal: to improve the search experience for financial
information. We hope Google Finance lives up to that aim by offering a
fresh perspective on company-related searches. To begin with, you no
longer have to remember a ticker or mutual fund symbol…”

There are 2 things I think make this an excellent tool:

1 – As it says above, you can just search for company name if you don’t know the ticker symbol.
2 – Once you’re on the information page, take a look at how much info there actually is!!! I LOVE the sliding graph, and the linking of News stories to dates on the graph… VERY cool!

It is still in Beta, (obviously, what Google tool isn’t?), so expect more cool features to come.
